Setting financial goals on paper has definitely helped our family. On the right column of our web site, there is a goal for a 529 account.  Since we have it set up in a progress bar we hope to reach the goal faster.  Last year we set a goal for a new car.  We saved up enough and we were able to obtain that goal!

Recently we had a

baby boy and the baby shower helped us out a  lot with the baby stuff.  However, there was still stuff we had to get.  We put those goals down on paper and we eventually ended up with a house full of baby gadgets!

Write your goals down so you see them every day.

Put them on your own blog, tape them to your bathroom mirror, or put them any place you frequent when thinking about spending money. Remember every time you spend money on something that isn’t on the goal list, the farther away you are from getting that goal accomplished.

My last point is for you to set "realistic" and obtainable goals.

For example, if your goal is to own a Ferrari and you are living pay check to pay check, the goal is not that tangible.  Its more of a long term goal!

So now that you are done reading this post, go ahead and browse out to the web and find a picture of some goals you would like to accomplish!

Here is what the Brokefamily.com family is setting for down the road:

  1. Compact SUV to tote around new baby and his friends
  2. Kelty Backpack to hike with the baby
  3. Set up College Fund
  4. Pay Off Mortgage
  5. Pay off Consumer Debt
  6. Cruise vacation

So guess what we did!  We printed off 5 pictures (SUV, backpack, 529 information, picture of our house, and a picture of a cruise ship).

Now we stare each of these down every time we enter and exit our home!  Wish us luck on our goal setting adventure!
